Annual Report 2010

2010 marks The Nationals 90th anniversary. Since 11 MPs joined together to form an independent political party on 22 January 1920, The Nationals have maintained nine decades of unbroken representation in Federal Parliament. No other party has been in government as long as The Nationals.

Today, The Nationals are still the voice of regional Australia, still advancing the national interest and still fighting for a fair go for allAustralians no matter where they live. Today, The Nationals’ reputation for punching above their weight is as strong as ever – demonstrated by the Party’s lead role in defeating the Rudd Government’s “great big tax on everything”; its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

In 2010, The Nationals will engage in another series of major debates and a Federal election in which a swing of just 2.5 percent is required to change the government.  A priority will be restoring the strength of the economy and the nation’s finances  With debate having resumed on Labor’s ETS and the release of the Henry Review, taxation will also dominate. Other big issues to feature include the environment, health, education, industrial relations, immigration, communications, transport, trade and the future of the Federation.

For all these reasons, The Nationals 2010 Federal Conference will be its most significant yet.  Held every three years, Federal Conference is the Party’s principal policy-setting forum, drawing together delegates from right across Australia, as well as the Party’s Federal and State Parliamentary teams.

The Nationals have a proud record of achievement over its 90 year history. It’s a record the Party is determined to build on at the coming Federal election and into the future.  Just as they have done in the past, the decisions made at our Federal Conference will shape The Nationals’ plans for building stronger regions and a stronger nation.

We hope you can join us at The Nationals 2010 Federal Conference to celebrate our history and be part of our future.
